Legião Urbana

Band formed: 1982

About:

Legião Urbana was one of the leading Brazilian rock bands of the 1980’s and 1990’s, hailed by the critics and with loads of passionate fans all of the country. Vocalist and band leader Renato Russo was dubbed a “rock poet” and his strong lyrics and deep, commanding voice clearly set Legião Urbana apart from the average rock band. Musically, Legião Urbana drew much inspiration from contemporary European rock bands, such as U2 and Joy Division, but added an unmistakably Brazilian touch. Legião Urbana was disbanded in 1997, after Renato Russo’s premature death (from AIDS).
